SAP Integration Suite now introduces the possibility to create Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers from API artifacts.

This is an important step for enterprise AI scenarios. Instead of simply exposing APIs to applications, Integration Suite can now help expose business capabilities as MCP-compatible tools that AI agents and MCP-compatible clients can discover and invoke.

At a high level, this means that existing REST and OData API artifacts deployed on Integration Cell can be exposed as MCP servers, making them available as tools for AI-driven use cases.

However, there are some key prerequisites to consider:

  • API Management capability must be activated
  • Integration Cell runtime must be activated
  • The user needs the PI_Integration_Developer role collection
  • A content package / integration package must exist
  • The source API artifact must already be deployed on Integration Cell
  • Only REST and OData API artifacts are supported in this scenario
  • Availability depends on the SAP Integration Suite service plan

Another relevant design point: each MCP server supports up to 15 tools.

But the most important question is not only:

“How do we expose an API as an MCP tool?”

The real question is:

👉 What should the MCP tool actually represent?

A technical, endpoint-shaped approach may work for demos, but enterprise scenarios need intent-shaped tools.

For example:

❌ patch_purchase_requisition_status
✅ approve_purchase_requisition

❌ exposing multiple low-level customer-related endpoints
✅ create_customer

This approach keeps business logic, sequencing, security and governance in the integration layer, instead of forcing the AI agent to reconstruct business processes across multiple API calls.

In my view, this positions SAP Integration Suite as a key governance layer for agentic AI in enterprise landscapes:

  • Integration Suite for orchestration and API exposure
  • API Management for security and governance
  • MCP Gateway for making business capabilities available to AI agents
